The first step
Know exactly where your heat goes.
Before anyone sells you a heater, a window or a single bag of insulation, measure. A heat-loss check shows, room by room, how your building loses heat and what would make the biggest difference.

What we check
Eight things, every time.
A heat-loss check looks at the whole building, because heat and moisture don’t respect the boundaries between trades.
Walls and roof
What they are made of, how thick, and how much heat each one lets through.
Windows and doors
Glazing, frames and, above all, how they were fitted into the wall.
Floors and slab edges
Ground floors, slab edges and plinths, where cold bridges hide.
Draughts and air leaks
Where cold air gets in and warm air gets out: gaps, ducts, chimneys and joints.
Damp and condensation
Moisture readings and the spots where walls fall below the dew point.
Heating and hot water
What you heat with now, how it is controlled, and what it costs to run.
Ventilation
How stale air and moisture leave the house, and where fresh air comes from.
Pipes at risk
Supply and heating pipes running through cold, freezing parts of the building.
How we measure
See the heat. Then calculate it.
A thermal camera shows where heat escapes. Moisture readings show where damp is building up. Then we put the numbers into a room-by-room heat-loss calculation at a winter design temperature, so the result is something you can plan with.
- Thermal imagingWhere useful, on a cold day or evening, to show heat escaping.
- Moisture readingsOn walls, floors and around windows.
- MeasurementsRooms, walls, windows and build-ups, or your drawings.
- CalculationHeat loss in watts for every room, and dew-point checks on the build-ups.
Heat-loss report · example
Ground floor, room by room
Priorities
- Insulate the north and west walls
- Replace bedroom windows
- Seal the roof hatch and eaves
Figures are an example of the format, not a real house.
What you receive
A report you can act on.
- Heat loss, room by room
In watts, at a winter design temperature, so you can see which rooms are worst and why.
- Where the heat goes
The share lost through walls, windows, roof, floor and air leakage.
- Damp and condensation risk
The surfaces and junctions most likely to collect moisture, marked on your plans.
- Priorities in order
The changes that make the biggest difference first, so your budget goes furthest.
- Options with costs
What each option costs and what it changes, including heating size and running costs.
Then we walk you through it, in person or on a call, in plain language.
For every kind of building
Homes, hotels and everything in between.

Questions
About the heat-loss check.
What does a heat-loss check cost?
It depends on the size and type of building. We tell you the cost, if any, before we visit, and nothing is charged that you have not agreed to.
How long does the visit take?
For most homes, a few hours on site. Larger buildings are scoped individually. The calculation and report follow after the visit.
Do I need drawings?
They help, but they are not essential. If there are no drawings, we measure what we need on site.
I only want underfloor heating. Do I still need this?
Yes, because the heat-loss calculation is how underfloor heating is sized. It is also the only honest way to tell you what it will cost to run in January.
Is the check for new buildings too?
Yes. For a building that is not yet built, we work from the drawings: the calculation then shapes the wall, roof and floor build-ups before anything is constructed.
